About 78th Wedding Anniversaries

Couples celebrating their 78th wedding anniversary would have began their married life when home comforts were essentially about warmth, security and togetherness. Life was less complicated on a material level, and simply being together was the most important aspect of their lives.

They were probably married during the era when Edward gave up his throne for his Wallis, and when turbulent times were on the horizon. It was also a period when silent movies became talking movies, and black and white turned into colour.

A night out often meant a trip to the cinema, to be whisked away into a fantasy world by the grace and elegance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Or a romantic meal at a restaurant… or simply an evening stroll along a country lane.

These are all timeless pleasures that today can be organised at home if your special couple are not as agile as they used to be. Well, except for abdications and world wars! Instead, expect another royal, the much-loved Queen Elizabeth, to send a card to mark your remarkable milestone.

But back to the celebrations… Dig out the “Flying Down to Rio” DVD and settle down with the couple and some pop-corn, then arrange for a take-away from their favourite restaurant, and later enjoy a gentle wander around the garden.

For a less intimate celebration with the whole family and long-time friends, organise a buffet, pop some Champagne and arrange for the grandchildren or even great grandchildren to perform a play together – for some wonderful family entertainment. Maybe even set up a family portrait, to create a cherished memento of their 78th wedding anniversary.

However you help them celebrate, make sure you absolutely pamper the happy couple, and remind them how much they mean to you and how proud you are of their achievement.
